Who was Wolf? Wolf

Brilliant prodigy destined for artistic fame.
Dedicated advocate for peace and social justice.
Willful young man over-indulged by his family.
Natural leader.
Too-precocious ladies’ man.
Keen observer of human foibles.
Articulate commentator in four languages.
Reckless youth too wise for his years.
Passionate and deeply devoted husband.
Pacifist in a time of militarism and war.
Exile from his homeland.
Jew facing vicious anti-semitism.
One man caught in the terror unleashed by Hitler.

Wolf was all of these things and more. Like the rest of us, he combined many different characteristics into a complex and paradoxical whole. Unlike most, he had enormous talents and intelligence. He tried to use these to combat the evil of Hitler and the Nazis. He lived in a time when his outsized, but human capacities put him in jeopardy and eventually cost him his life. He never saw the peace or the social justice he worked so hard for. And yet he left for us a legacy of art and a life to be contemplated for its soaring ambitions and ultimate tragedy.
